…no scratch that, there are many things I don’t understand about our judicial system (and I’m someone who makes my living in it). But, the one thing that perplexes me above every other legal mystery is how easily drunk drivers get off.
Minneapolis mom faces sentencing in fatal DWI accident
Wernick and Bettinger made their remarks in late November when Driscoll pleaded guilty to hitting Iverson as she headed to her East Isles Neighborhood house from a party in St. Paul for her daughter’s graduation from St. Paul Academy and Summit Schools.
She admitted drinking more than she had planned that night. She got behind the wheel of her black Audi and headed west on Marshall Avenue. She said she doesn’t remember anything after crossing the Mississippi River bridge onto East Lake Street.
“I woke up and there was glass lying everywhere,” she said. Driscoll, who will be 50 on Saturday, apologized at her November court appearance and said she had run herself ragged and was tired that evening after several social events.
According to the charges, shortly after midnight on June 14, Driscoll’s car suddenly veered to the right and struck Iverson, throwing him through the air and knocking him from his shoes. Her car then smashed into a glass bus shelter, destroying it. Iverson didn’t regain consciousness and died on June 16.
So she’ll get 8 months locked up. Big woopdee freakin do.

I noticed something similar in a news story I got tweeted a week or so ago. A lady in her 50s or 60s was hit by a driver who was texting. She ended up quadriplegic. He got a fine and a few points on his licence. She’s been going round with a sign on the back of her wheelchair saying “don’t text and drive” and that she’s in the wheelchair because of someone who did just that.
In the UK, you would get a fine and points on your licence for using a hand-held phone while driving. Not for busting someone’s spinal cord by doing that – for that, you’d get disqualified and probably locked up.
Oh, that last story I mentioned happened in Michigan.
