passing by

via AbuS, in memory of Mustafa Mahmud:

And how many a sign within the heavens and earth do they pass by while they, therefrom, are turning away. (12:105)

AbuS asked me what I saw in this verse last night, and I was like, duh, there are signs in this world that we look at but don’t comprehend their meaning.

And he said, no, look again.

Of course, I’m like, um what did I miss?

The phrase translated here as pass by literally means to go past it, physically.  When the Qur’an was revealed, people obviously couldn’t physically pass by the heavens, so they would interpret the phrase figuratively.

But here we are now in the age of space travel, and we literally can and do pass by the signs of the heaven, without noticing them.

SubhanAllah.  Don’t let it pass your by.
